International Data Corporation (IDC) has hosted a web conference on the future of the digital world, and it has produced a number of predictions about the future of digital security. Based on the findings from the IDC FutureScape: Worldwide Security 2015 Predictions conference, it looks like biometric technology is going to play an increasingly important role in digital security over the next several years.
The most relevant prediction concerns the use of biometric technology in mobile devices. We’re already well aware of its growing prominence, as smaller smartphone developers have begun to follow Apple’s lead in including fingerprint scanners on new mobile devices as a matter of course. IDC predicts that over the next year, 15 percent of all mobile devices will use biometric technology, and by 2020 that number will reach 50 percent.
But there are some other predicted trends that will also prominently involve biometrics: IDC predicts that by 2016, the main method of access control for 20 percent of all highly sensitive enterprise data will be multi-factor authentication – a security system in which biometrics can play a very important role, as suggested in the FIDO Alliance’s standards.
The IDC also predicts that by 2018, security via software-as-a-service models will comprise 33 percent of all security solutions, while 25 percent of all security applications that have previously been offered independently will actually be embedded directly into business applications. Biometrics technology is broad and flexible enough to be offered through both models, so it’s poised to take advantage of these market trends.
