Biometric security specialist Hoyos Labs has teamed up with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to improve government testing of contactless fingerprint scanning technology.
The Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) is the product of NIST’s call for private sector collaboration in its efforts to improve the technology’s standards and evaluation. While NIST has thoroughly established expertise with respect to traditional fingerprint scanning standards and evaluation processes, it is now seeking to catch up to the rising demand from law enforcement agencies for faster, more hygienic contactless options. Hoyos Labs now joins MorphoTrak and 3M Company in seeking to assist NIST with these efforts.
Commenting on the collaboration in a statement, Hoyos Labs CEO Hector Hoyos called it a “mutually beneficial” opportunity. “Not only are we playing a critical role in building a worldwide standard for testing contactless fingerprint scanners, but NIST researchers are also providing us with new scenarios that we have been previously unable to test using human subjects – to help us better understand any limitations to our product and make the necessary improvements,” he said.
Given Hoyos Labs’ experience in pursuing innovative biometric solutions the company may prove well-suited to helping NIST explore this increasingly popular modality.
