Gemalto Scores Biometric ePassport Program in Moldova

The Republic of Moldova has selected Gemalto to supply the nation with next generation ePassports. The contract was awarded by the Center for State Information Resources and will see the company providing not just the secure documents, but also integration services support during the issuance process.

This is a multi-year deal beginning this summer. The new documents will be replacing the previous generation of passports and enable visa-free travel for Moldovan citizens between the Republic and the European Union.

The next gen ePassports will contain a digital portrait and two biometric fingerprint scans inside its contactless microprocessor. Additionally, the new Moldovan passports will be among the first ever to implement Supplemental Access Control, otherwise known as SAC: the latest security mechanism mandated by the European Union as recommended by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The director general of the Center for State Information Resources, Serghei Railean comments:

“As a major benefit for our citizens, the new document will facilitate access to countries that have deployed ePassport verification infrastructures. We are looking forward to working with Gemalto to provide Moldovan citizens with the latest e-Identity documents for unprecedented levels of security and privacy.”

The ePassports also come outfitted with Gemalto’s Sealys eTravel software. According to the company this offers very high speeds when it comes time for the documents to be read by authorities. Each passport is also durable, promising great resistance to wear and tear over a ten-year life.
