Gemalto has developed a new biometric ePassport solution for the government of East Timor, the company has announced.
The passport solution allows government officials to register citizens’ fingerprints at designated offices and embassies, and the passports themselves feature embedded microprocessors enabling contactless scanning.
In a statement announcing the collaboration, Gemalto suggested that it’s part of a broader effort to modernize government services in the country, which attained independence in 2002. For citizens, the company said, it means “a speedy application process and issuance as well as seamless border crossing.”
East Timor Minister of Justice Ivo Valente added, “East Timor citizens can now travel anywhere around the world, with unprecedented levels of security and privacy.”
News of the effort comes only a week after Gemalto announced that it had been contracted to provide secure, biometric driver licenses for Canada’s Atlantic provinces, suggesting growing esteem for the company as a provider of electronic identification documents. In its East Timor project, the company has worked with local partner Visi Mitra Unipessoal Lda, with another company, KOMSCO, subcontracted to make booklets for the passports.
