Contactless Biometrics To Enable Galaxy S9’s Massive Display

If the big trend in smartphone design right now is full-size displays – and it really seems to be – Samsung is poised to push it close to the limit with its next Galaxy S-series smartphones, according to new reports.

Citing an anonymous source, SamMobile reports that the Galaxy S9 will feature a 90 percent screen-to-body ratio, with a top bezel narrower than that of the S8 and a bottom bezel verging on “non-existent”. That’s a notable leap over the Galaxy S8’s 84 percent screen-to-body ratio, and it beats the 82.9 percent screen-to-body ratio of the iPhone X.

The rumor comes along with speculation that the Galaxy S9 will be an iterative upgrade over the S8 sporting relatively minor technological upgrades. Still, Samsung is also thought to be working on upgrades to its iris and facial recognition technology for the new devices in order to remain competitive against Apple’s iPhone X with its infrared facial recognition system. And there’s still the possibility that Samsung will be able to incorporate the in-display fingerprint recognition technology that is now emerging, which could give it a further edge, especially if awareness of the importance of multimodal security continues to grow.

As for when the S9 devices will arrive, they’re expected to make an appearance at January’s Consumer Electronics Show, though Samsung is also reportedly planning an official launch event for March.
