Huawei has officially launched its new Honor V10 smartphone, and it once again features biometric fingerprint scanning thanks to Fingerprint Cards technology.
While the device sports a large, 18:9 aspect ratio screen – a key trend in today’s smartphone market – it still has a little room at the bottom of its front face for a home button featuring a fingerprint sensor, in this case the FPC1267 model. It’s one of the first mobile devices to feature this sensor model, though there have been announcements of multiple integrations of other FPC sensors into Huawei phones over the past month alone.
While the Honor V10 is a splashy device in its own right, perhaps the most attention grabbing aspect of its launch doesn’t concern that device at all: At the end of its media event, Huawei showed off infrared facial recognition technology that is currently under development, and which already appears to be more accurate than the Face ID system of the iPhone X. It’s another sign of how the mobile industry is responding to Apple’s new biometric authentication system, and it suggests Huawei could end up being one of the first major smartphone rivals to compete seriously in this area.
It also may point to FPC’s role in facilitating that competition. Apple’s introduction of Face ID allowed it to do away with the traditional home button on the iPhone X, freeing up space for a full-size screen, and that’s a trend many other mobile makers are eager to follow. Huawei may have similar aims with its own facial recognition system, but given that FPC recently announced it had developed viable in-display fingerprint sensor technology, Huawei’s shift to a full-size display could put it among the first smartphone makers to take advantage of FPC’s technology, allowing for multimodal biometric user authentication.
But that’s all speculation, of course. Today, Huawei fans are likely to be satisfied with a more traditional approach to biometric authentication, especially if they’re getting a big 18:9 display anyway.
