Last week at FindBiometrics we continued to explore Healthcare Month while FinTech, government applications and multimodal innovation made up the bulk of the biometrics industry news.
Here’s a look back on the top digital identity stories from week that was:
Healthcare Month Continues
It was week two of Healthcare Month 2016, and as we continued our examination of all the ways biometric technologies are transforming the way we find medical help, we took a look at how strong authentication is transforming clinics, pharmacies and other outpatient care facilities. If you’re just getting caught up with Healthcare Month 2016 now, be sure to head back and check out our primer on February’s topic of the month.

Getting Ready For Barcelona
We are one week closer to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and as such we’ve started to get an idea of what to expect at the massive event in mobility when it comes to biometrics. We already know that Visa’s showing will have a strong biometric component, and that FotoNation will be showing off its wares too. Samsung, as usual, is expected to launch its next flagship Galaxy phone (which will almost certainly have a fingerprint sensor like its predecessors) and there has been speculation that the company has big announcements in store for its mobile wallet.

Financial Biometrics
Speaking of mobile wallets, Apple Pay was in the news again last week with an unfortunate seven hour enrollment disruption and some impressive numbers in terms of card issuer support. We reported on Worldcore, which has turned to voice biometrics to authenticate payments, FirstBank which has integrated multi-factor authentication on its mobile app, and Ally Bank which has enabled Touch ID login for its iPhone-using customers.
The FIDO Alliance submitted its comments to the European Banking Authority regarding the latter’s efforts to standardize digital payments. Meanwhile, EyeVerify won acclaim at Finovate Europe. Here’s a look back on last week’s news regarding biometrics and finance:

Government Applications
Turning to government matters, last week we saw new conversations sparked in the wake of the White House’s new digital security measures. Meanwhile, the US CBP continued in its biometric border control initiative taking place in Otay Mesa.
Internationally, the Indian government doubled down on its efforts to implement biometric attendance tracking for workers by threatening to withhold salaries from the non-compliant. In Uganda we saw preparation for the upcoming biometric election, and in Nigeria we saw biometrics being used to tackle pension fraud in Lagos.

Fingerprint Matters
ZKAccess announced the launch of its new ZKBioPack software, a move done in collaboration with Schneider Electric. Schneider customers can now easily implement ZKAccess biometric access control solutions, many of which leverage fingerprint authentication. Meanwhile, SecuGen prepared for the RSA 2016 conference where it will be showcasing the UN20 Serial sensor—part of the company’s Unity BDP product line.
From a mobile fingerprint perspective, last week we learned that Touch ID might be getting a pressure sensitive upgrade in the future, and saw 1Password 6 leverage Android enabled fingerprint scanning. In Norway things took a more litigious tone, with a judge ruling that police can compel a suspect to unlock his biometrics protected smartphone.

Cognitec saw the deployment of its FaceVACS solution in some major Macau casinos last week, while we reported on a new sensor from OmniVision that can be used for facial recognition in mobile devices. Turning to matters of the eyeball, we took a look at Eyefluence’s iUi eye-tracking technology, which has applications in both virtual and augmented reality.
