A new Android-based solution could prove to be a big help to coroners and medical examiners. Called FingerSCAN DecedentID, the system is aimed at offering speedy identification of the deceased.
Developed by WoVo Identity Soltuions, it’s based on Integrated Biometrics’ Watson Mini fingerprint scanner, and WoVo says it can be used with commercial off-the-shelf Android mobile devices. And given that the Watson Mini is compliant with the FBI’s IAFIS and Appendix F standards, medical officials using the solution can be confident in its efficacy.
The solution was debuted at the Colorado Coroners Association Annual Conference this month, after a pilot project in which the device was tested by the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner. Commenting on that experience in a statement, coroner Harris Neil said the solution enabled staff “to identify decedents within hours of the death, rather than the following day, as was the case with inked prints.” Neil added that this can offer relief to the concerned families contacting authorities after a death is reported in the media without identifying details. Thus it’s a solution that could prove beneficial both to authorities in the public.
