An LA-based startup is working to further usher biometric technology into everyday life with a new biometric padlock called the BenjiLock.
It’s pretty much what it sounds like: A standard-looking padlock, with an embedded fingerprint scanner. It’s rechargeable, comes in a variety of colors, and is also compatible with a key in the event of an emergency – as when a would-be intruder makes multiple attempts to open the lock, and the device then automatically deletes its primary users’ biometric profiles, of which it can support up to four.
It isn’t the first biometric lock concept. TappLock, for example, is a fingerprint-based padlock that garnered some considerable interest on Kickstarter early last year. And BIO-key has just announced its own line of biometric padlocks, which will be showcased at this week’s Consumer Electronics Show.
BenjiLock will be there, too, and has already been named a CES 2017 Innovation Awards Honoree; but it won’t hit the market until Q3 of this year, and it’s priced at about $80, so there is still plenty of room for its competition in this emerging niche of the biometrics market.
