Swedish fingerprint sensor manufacturer Fingerprint Cards AB (FPC) announced today that it will be delivering it’s new FPC1020 – the world’s first touch sensor specifically designed for Windows and Android – to OEMs in the next few weeks.
“Thanks to Microsoft’s extensive efforts to provide a fully integrated support for biometry and in particular touch fingerprint sensors with Windows 8.1, we see a very strong potential with the Windows based devices market segment,” says company CTO, EVP and head of strategy and product management, Jӧrgen Lantto. “We are delighted to respond to this opportunity by introducing a capacitive touch fingerprint sensor optimized for integration in devices using Windows.”
Of course, the support that Microsoft has provided FPC in the past has already proven beneficial, the company citing it as an ongoing boon throughout a year that has consistently seen Fingerprint Cards breaking its own financial records. With the FPC1020, showing up on Windows-running PCs, tablets and smartphones is only half of the story.
Mobility has been a strong focus of FPC’s recently, with a number of smartphones, phablets and tablet laptops made available on the Asian market. The FPC1020 is going to continue pushing for better-than-PIN mobile authentication on more than just Windows phones.
According to Lantto, “FPC1020 will enable smartphone and tablet OEMs to offer consumers a compelling user experience combining great convenience and security with excellent performance and appealing design. There is an overwhelming demand from the leading OEMs to integrate touch fingerprint sensors into mobile devices and we are delighted to respond to this strong demand by introducing the first capacitive touch fingerprint sensor optimized for mobile devices using Android.”
This optimization for Android will no doubt land on welcoming ears when it reaches those still waiting for a biometric PIN alternative for their non-Apple smartphones.
