Some emerging biometric modalities are going to see steady growth over the next several years, according to a new report from TechNavio. Entitled “Emerging Biometrics Technologies: Global Industry Analysis 2015-2019”, the report predicts a CAGR of 13.37 percent between 2014 and 2019 for the modalities covered.
Those modalities include keystroke recognition, DNA analysis, EEG/ECG scanning and gait recognition. And indeed, we’re already seeing some of these and similar technologies emerge as serious new contenders in the overall biometrics market. Keystroke recognition plays a role in behavioral biometrics and analytics platforms like NuData’s NuDetect solution, for example; and Zitko’s Arki wristband uses posture and gait analysis as a basis for user authentication. DNA and ECG biometrics are a little more green, but we are starting to see development of the latter, at least in academic research.
There are some challenges for the market, of course. TechNavio notes that many of these modalities face strong competition from less expensive non-biometric technologies, and in a synopsis Research and Markets asserts that a lack of standardization is also hindering growth. Nevertheless, these emerging technologies are set to ride the boom in the overall biometrics market, with solid growth expected for the next several years at least.
