The European Association for Biometrics (EAB) is organizing the region’s biggest conference on identity management and biometrics research. The EAB Research Projects Conference 2015 is funded by the European Commission and will be hosted at the Fraunhofer IGD premises in Darmstadt, Germany.
It’s the second such conference, aiming to present the results of various research projects and discuss how they can benefit European society. Among the topics discussed this time around will be template protection, speaker verification, and border control, the last having made a lot of news lately in the biometrics industry given EU countries’ keenness to implement biometric screening systems at airports and the like.
There will also be two major panels, both featuring experts from the European Agency for the operational management of large-scale IT systems in the area of freedom, security and justice (eu-LISA). The first will tackle the impacts of new EU regulations on data protection and privacy on the biometrics field, while the second will look at large-scale biometric deployments such as the European Smart Borders project, and will discuss how standards can be applied for future such endeavours.
As biometric technologies become increasingly prominent, these kinds of conferences could prove highly valuable in helping to foster cross-pollination between researchers and experts in the field, and in ensuring that the industry has useful standards to work with as the technology is pushed forward. The EAB Research Projects Conference 2015 will run September 7-8.
