The US Department of Defense (DoD) is sticking with MorphoTrust‘s Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS). The DoD is going ahead with its third year renewal option in a licensing deal valued at $3.5 million.
ABIS is a large-scale biometric identification platform that the DoD uses to manage identification records and for identity verification more generally. It offers finger, palm, face and iris modalities, with one-to-one and one-to-many matching capabilities. The system has been in use since 2013, and according to MorphoTrust it has played a supporting role in critical homeland security applications.
In a press release announcing the licensing renewal, MorphoTrust CEO Bob Eckel explained, “Over the years, MorphoTrust has proudly served the identity needs of DoD and many other agencies, and our team looks forward to bringing our expertise and support in the years ahead.”
It’s a major deal for MorphoTrust, which has extensive experience working with government agencies beyond the DoD. Two US state tax agencies recently contracted the company to provide electronic IDs, for example; and MorphoTrust also runs the IdentoGO centers where American travelers can sign up for expedited, biometric pre-screening for air travel.
