The DigitalPersona TCS1 Steelcoat sensor has been selected by Visiontek, a telecom equipment and software solutions provider, to aid citizens of India to access services such as banking and entitlement programs. Selected for its durability, performance capabilities and cost, DigitalPersona’s fingerprint sensor is currently deployed in 60,000 readers for these express identification services.
The sensor was also chosen for its compliance with national Standardization Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) criteria for image quality and ruggedness.
Fraud is a global problem, and in India this is no different. Visiontek identified the issue – that ghost identities and impersonation were preying on the citizens and taking advantage of the government and banks – and decided to attack this challenge of identity with fingerprint biometrics. After selecting the TCS1 for the above reasons, the company when about developing a full solution that could better tie citizens to their identities without adding layers of unnecessary inconvenience.
“Achieving the equally important goals of citizen convenience, fraud prevention and low program costs requires exceptional technology,” says Ramesh Chunduru, director of sales and marketing for Visiontek. “We chose the TCS1 Steelcoat sensor because it consistently captures quality fingerprints in a variety of demanding environmental conditions. It also offers the most economical solution in terms of lifetime cost of ownership.”
Here is how the deployment works: the solution is put in the hands of field officers tasked with scanning the fingerprints of citizens wanting access to banking services or government privileges such as food distribution programs or the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (a law ensuring work for rural citizens of India).
“We’re proud to be part of programs that bring entitlements to Indian citizens and financial inclusion to people who previously had no access to banking services,” comments Richard Agostinelli, DigitalPersona president and CEO. “Because the Indian government has chosen biometrics as the preferred method of secure identification — and because the TCS1 is the only STQC-certified silicon sensor on the market — we expect our involvement in these critical programs will continue to grow.”
