Government officials in Cameroon are preparing to register the biometrics of taxpayers.
As Business in Cameroon reports, the Inland Revenue Administration will begin the process next week, on September 12th. In the beginning, officials will collect the biometric data only from taxpayers categorized under the medium and large enterprise sections of the country’s tax code, and they will each be issued a new identification number at the end of the process.
It’s part of a larger modernization program in which biometric technology appears to play an important role. The government is also preparing to issue new electronic citizen ID cards, each of which will feature the cardholder’s fingerprint biometric data, for which it has contracted the services of Gemalto.
As for the specific taxpayer registration project, it’s the result of a recommendation from the Cameroon Business Forum, and offers benefits to both the government and citizens alike, with Minister of Finance Alamine Ousmane Mey asserting that it will improve citizens’ security while improving government revenue collection.
