Business is booming in the automated passport control (APC) kiosk market, according to Acuity Market Intelligence. In a new report, the market research firm calls it the fastest-growing segment of the ABC (automated border control) market.
Looking at the last two years, Acuity notes that APC kiosks have been deployed in 37 different airports, with more than 1000 such kiosks currently in operation in North America alone. The firm pegs the annual growth rate of the market at 70 percent (CAGR). And Acuity principal analyst Maxine Most asserts that while the North American market is “approaching saturation levels, the rest of the world remains a largely untapped opportunity.”
Moreover, a recent announcement from America’s Department of Homeland Security that they’re in talks with a number of countries in Asia, Europe, and the Caribbean to set up pre-clearance programs could also prove to be “a huge boon” for the market.
Most identifies major vendors as Vancouver Airport Authority, which has a whopping 66 percent of the market share; and SITA, with 20 percent. Only four other vendors round out the rest of the market.
It’s also worth noting that the TSA’s PreCheck program, in collaboration with MorphoTrust, has been a prominent driver of the upwards trend in APC kiosks as automated biometric passenger screening kiosks have been set up throughout the US. With extensive planning underway for similar programs in Europe – both for air travel and at ground border crossings – there does indeed appear to be a great deal of excitement and potential for the market.
