Last week at FindBiometrics we continued our 2015 Biometrics Year in Review while border control, financial applications and fingerprint sensors made up the bulk of the industry news.
Here is a look back on all the top identity management headlines from the week that was:
Year in Review
As we near the end of our 13th annual Biometrics Year in Review we turned our attention to matters regarding public perception and non-mobile applications. We aren’t the only ones reflecting on 2015 either, with Fingerprint Cards announcing that it will issue its end of year report on February 4th.

Border Control
Border control biometrics were in the news last week with SITA’s eGates processing travelers in Naples, Vision-Box technology improving security and convenience in Aruba, and the US Customs and Border Protection Agency expanding the biometric screening process at JFK International Airport. The CBP is concerned with more than just airports, of course, and in that regard it contracted Iris ID last week to provide biometric solutions for use in the pilot project underway at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry in San Diego.

National ID, Voter ID
Keeping that governmental perspective for a moment, we also had headlines relating to national and voter ID projects. In India we saw the Aadhaar program once again invoked to cut down on fraud with plans to use the national ID system to ensure students and their parents aren’t gaming the Right To Education Act. Uganda, meanwhile, was preparing for a biometric election which is scheduled to take place next month.

Financial and Retail
In financial news last week we saw Apple Pay score more support while Samsung Pay launched in Spain. The Australian Taxation Office implemented Nuance Communications’ voice biometrics in its mobile app, we saw an encouraging report on biometrics in retail, and Daon became a prefered partner of the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU).

Fingerprint
As usual, fingerprint biometrics made their share of headlines last week, with Fingerprint Cards and Precise Biometrics announcing yet another smartphone integration. We took a look at Synaptics’ IronVeil solution and reported on how the company’s tech will feature into the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 product line. Meanwhile, Morpho (Safran) is slated to expand the Albuquerque police department’s AFIS capabilities, and Integrated Biometrics received ISO 9001 certification. Finally, we also got a sneak peek at an upcoming smartphone from Huawei that is rumored to sport a fingerprint sensor.

FIDO and Friends
The FIDO Alliance announced last week that it hit another major milestone now that over 100 FIDO Certified products are available on the market. FIDO’s members were all over the news, as a matter of fact, with EyeVerify weighing in on biometric scanning challenges in a new blog post, Dropbox enabling Windows Hello biometric authentication, and Intel releasing a new line of processors with strong authentication capabilities.

Faces, Behavior and Health
Last week’s news was relatively multimodal, with more headlines dealing with facial recognition, behavioral biometrics and vital readings. TelSign partnered with BehavioSec to bring behavioral biometrics to its mobile identity platform, while Virgin Pulse built up its workforce health management platform with vital biometric tech. In facial recognition we saw innovation and deployment, with university researchers developing new forensic technologies that leverage the modality and the Scottish Professional Football League considering a face biometrics system to mitigate soccer-based violence.
