Tascent, a biometrics developer based in Silicon Valley, has released a new white paper arguing for the implementation of biometric technologies in the air travel industry. Entitled “A New Golden Age for Air Travel”, the report suggests that biometric technologies can help to make air travel a more enjoyable and appealing experience for customers.
It all revolved around the advantages offered by biometric identification, according to Tascent CEO Dean Senner. Such systems could help to expedite the passenger screening process prior to boarding – and indeed, many do already, via TSA PreCheck and similar biometric screening programs. But biometric identification could also speed things along in depositing baggage, accessing special loyalty perks, and so on.
In flight, biometric identification could also be used to personalize the entertainment experience, an application currently being explored by companies working on smart car systems, as well. And in the same vein, biometric authentication could be used to authorize customer purchases in flight, a move that would be more convenient for the traveler while raising revenues from products marketing during flights.
Senner wasn’t alone in seeing this kind of potential; the Tascent report also quotes International Council of Tourism Partners (ICTP) President Geoffrey Lipman as asserting that as more travelers fly around the world, the industry must “find radical ways to increase their enjoyment, reduce their impact and speed them through controls, with simpler processes and better security,” adding, “This study shows how that can be done more efficiently, using modern technology — it holds great promise for the immediate future.”
