New Academic Partnership Could Help Gemalto to Strengthen Government Ties

Gemalto has entered into an official partnership with the University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Identity (UTCID).

The academic institution was first established in 2010 with a mandate to publicize best practices, assess future threats, and offer other educational assistance to the public concerning identity management and security. Now, Gemalto says it will work with the school on related R&D efforts, particularly with respect to everyday applications of biometric identification, innovations in traveler screening, identity security in digital financial services, and mobile driver’s licenses.

In a statement announcing the partnership, Gemalto Government Business Americas’ Paul Beverly asserted that UTCID’s “focus on security and privacy aligns perfectly with our company’s vision of helping people trust one another in an increasingly digital world.” UTCID Director Suzanne Barber, meanwhile, said the partnership “provides the expertise our students and faculty need to continually enhance our research efforts.”

The partnership’s announcement comes after UTCID was contracted by the Department of Homeland Security this summer to investigate how biometric technology can be used to improve everyday life for Americans. Now, with Gemalto offering R&D assistance in this and other areas of identity security, the firm could establish stronger ties not just in the academic sector but with government interests, as well.
