Aqara Launches Face-scanning Camera for Home Security

Smart home hardware maker and Xiaomi subsidiary Aqara has announced the release of the new facial recognition-capable Aqara Camera Hub G3, its latest Apple HomeKit-enabled security camera.

The Camera Hub G3 features 2304 x 1296 2K resolution in addition to its local facial and gesture recognition features, while also being able to stream to Amazon and Google smart displays. Additionally, with its 110-degree wide-angle lens and its pan-and-tilt capabilities, it can offer full 360-degree coverage.

The G3’s facial and gesture recognition capabilities are made possible using advanced artificial intelligence and give the user the ability to recognize and greet visitors, while also having the option of being able to identify as many as five unique hand signals.

The device’s support for Apple’s HomeKit means users are able to store up to 10 days of recorded footage on their existing iCloud account, with local storage also possible via the device’s built-in micro SD card slot.

Aside from its HomeKit support, the Camera Hub G3 is also compatible with the Zigbee IoT low-power, open network standard, and can also be configured as an IR blaster. Its Zigbee compatibility means that it can function as a Zigbee 3.0 hub security system, giving users the ability to set the camera to quickly arm and begin capturing events as soon as they leave their home.

Meanwhile, the IR functionality means the G3 is able to send commands to other connected smart home devices such as thermostats, TVs, and robot vacuums using the Aqara app, with support to pair up to 128 Aqara-branded Zigbee devices.
