The numbers are in today from Apple regarding iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus sales over the weekend. According to a press release from the company, the number of devices sold exceeds 10 million, breaking previous records.
In terms of identity management, this record breaking sales weekend is exceptional because each of those 10 million plus iPhones comes ready with Touch ID, the biometric fingerprint sensor that replaces lock screen PINs, account sign in and enables mobile payment via the Apple Pay application.
Apple’s CEO commented on the record breaking launch, saying that sales exceeded the company’s expectations.
“We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin,” said Cook. “While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible.”
On Friday, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus launched in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK. In Vancouver, British Columbia, demand for the biometric smartphone produced a crowd so large that ten RCMP officers were deployed to manage the resulting line that stretched past 200 meters in length.
According to Apple, 20 additional countries will be added to the list of new iPhone-having nations on September 26. The expanded rollout will include Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey and United Arab Emirates.
The iPhone 6 and it’s larger sibling were announced earlier this month to much fanfare. In addition to the new smartphones and the mobile wallet solution, Apple announced it’s forthcoming wearable gadget, the Apple Watch, which allows for vital biometric measurement and can also be used in conjunction with Apple Pay.
