In a recent announcement, American Express revealed its plan to pilot facial and fingerprint recognition technologies for user authentication at online checkouts. This new biometric feature has been integrated into the company’s SafeKey 3-D Secure authentication tool to further enhance security during online transactions.
SafeKey 3-D Secure is an online payment security protocol that aims to reduce fraud and provide a safer online transaction experience. It adds an additional layer of verification during the online payment process, ensuring that the person making the transaction is indeed the cardholder. With the integration of biometric technologies developed with the aid of web authentication solutions from the FIDO Alliance and World Wide Web Consortium, American Express is taking a significant step toward minimizing fraud while simplifying the checkout process.
J.J. Kieley, the Vice President of Digital Identity & Commerce Experiences at American Express, expressed the company’s proactive approach towards staying ahead of fraudulent activities. “Now, checking out safely and securely is as easy as unlocking your phone. SafeKey’s biometric facial and fingerprint recognition minimises friction while maximising security for our card members at checkout. It’s how we check in when you checkout,” stated Kieley.
The pilot program is set to commence with a select group of US customers who will become eligible after completing a security validation during the SafeKey checkout process, provided they use a device and browser that support the newly introduced facial and fingerprint recognition features. The full-scale rollout of these features to all US cardholders is anticipated in early 2024, marking a substantial stride in American Express’s efforts to bolster online transaction security while making the process more user-friendly.
This development underscores the growing trend among financial institutions to leverage biometric technologies in enhancing online security measures, thereby ensuring a seamless and secure transaction experience for users.
