Alcatraz Adds VMS Utility With ONVIF Certification

Alcatraz AI has augmented the utility of its flagship Rock facial recognition product. The Rock was originally designed for access control, but can now be integrated into a more complete Video Management System (VMS) after achieving ONVIF certification.

ONVIF itself is a non-profit organization that has laid out a set of performance standards for IP-based security solutions. Those standards are intended to promote the interoperability of physical security products, insofar as products that have been certified will be compatible with other products in the ONVIF ecosystem.

As a result, organizations will now be able to use The Rock for access control, and for ongoing video surveillance. With regard to the former, the terminal can still be installed at a point of entry, where it will use facial recognition to verify the identities of people trying to gain access to a building. It will also capture a live video feed with the help of a 2MP camera, and that feed can be filtered directly into whatever VMS platform the organization happens to be using. In doing so, The Rock negates the need for an additional device at the doors of the facility.

“Developing products based on open standards such as ONVIF is a core design principle at Alcatraz,” said Alcatraz VP of Product Blaine Frederick. “Adding ONVIF capabilities to the Rock and having it certified allows us to bring value to customers by ensuring product compatibility and eliminating proprietary vendor lock-in.” 

The Rock specifically has Profile S and Profile T ONVIF certification for IP video streaming. Alcatraz itself has been working to build up its client roster through a series of distribution partnerships. Many of those partners are based in the United States, though the company is looking to expand globally after signing on with Switched On Space in London.
