AirTera has introduced DepartureCheck, a real-time identity authentication and biometric matching platform for airports and airlines. The system combines document verification with facial recognition to help detect fraud, validate passenger information, and reduce boarding mistakes. According to the company’s announcement, DepartureCheck is designed to operate alongside existing airport and airline tools and can be deployed in modular fashion.
What DepartureCheck Does
The platform performs live biometric matching between a passenger’s face and the photo on an official identity document. It checks for expired or fraudulent IDs and cross-references passenger manifests to prevent misboarding. Operators can use these capabilities at check-in, security, and boarding to streamline identity workflows while maintaining compliance with airline and airport procedures.
DepartureCheck integrates with aviation management systems, including FL3XX, so operators can coordinate identity checks with flight operations and crew processes. AirTera says the platform aligns with widely recognized security and compliance frameworks such as NIST SP 800-53, NIST SP 800-63, and SOC 2. These controls cover areas like access management, system integrity, data protection, and identity assurance, which are central to regulated environments in aviation.
Market Context and Next Steps
Airports worldwide are testing and adopting automated identity tools to speed passenger flows and improve security. Recent deployments at facilities such as Nashville International Airport and Perth Airport illustrate the broader shift toward biometric-supported processes across the passenger journey. Industry bodies are also mapping contactless travel resources, as seen in IATA’s directory efforts that aim to help airports and airlines understand solution options and readiness.
For operators, the primary consideration is how to combine face-to-ID matching with other risk controls. This includes document authenticity checks, watchlist screening where permitted, and strong audit trails. Alignment with security standards can help organizations design governance around data collection, retention, and deletion while meeting regional privacy requirements. With those measures in place, airports and airlines can better balance efficient processing with safeguards against identity misuse.
AirTera plans to demonstrate DepartureCheck at the NBAA Business Aviation Conference and Exhibition in Las Vegas, Nevada, where stakeholders can evaluate the workflow and integration approach in person.
