A few of the biggest growth trends within the biometrics industry are reflected in this week’s roundup of FindBiometrics’ top stories. There’s also the inescapable theme of COVID-19, as well as a call to action concerning government-issued ID.
To start, let’s turn our attention to the ongoing ascent of biometric airport screening. Readers showed a great deal of interest in this week’s news that Thales was working with AENA, Iberia Airlines, and Inetum to expand the scope of a biometric passenger screening pilot program at Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport in Madrid:

Biometric airport screening was also an important topic in a new interview with Jason Van Sice, NEC Corporation of America’s Vice President of Aviation. The company’s renowned facial recognition technology, together with temperature detection tech, is being used to screen visitors at Hawaiian airports, helping to curb the spread of COVID-19. Van Sice discussed this and other important topics concerning the industry:

Another huge, ongoing trend in the biometrics industry is the rise of selfie-based biometric onboarding, which has seen a huge spike in popularity over the past year as various organizations looked for new ways to verify customers after the pandemic pushed them into online channels. The renowned market research firm Acuity Market Intelligence got a lot of attention this week with its breakdown of the trend in a new report:

Then there’s the subject of one of the biggest, long-term trends in the industry: the gradual displacement of password-based security by biometrics. This was the subject of one of this week’s in-depth features on the results of the 2020 FindBiometrics Year in Review survey. The feature looked specifically at responses to Question #8, which asked participants if and when they think biometrics will replace the password as the primary method of user authentication online:

And finally, FindBiometrics readers showed a lot of interest this week in a new report from the SIA examining various government digital identity programs.
