The CEO of Air France-KLM, an airline serving France and the Netherlands, is urging French authorities to take measures to expedite security screening at the country’s major airports. 
Speaking to Reuters, Jean-Marc Janaillac said that lines at the Charles de Gaulle and Paris Orly airports’ security screening can be over two hours long.
Janaillac said authorities should use more selective screening, employ more border police, and expand the use of biometric screening.
On that last point, at least, help is on the way. Gemalto is beginning work this year on deploying 87 automated eGates at the airports that will use fingerprint and, later, facial recognition to scan travelers. That should allow for both enhanced security and faster queues. especially once it is expanded beyond French citizens to all EU members later in the project.
While there is an urgent need for such solutions now, given the busy travel season in the country, these kinds of projects cannot be rushed – a confused rollout of biometric passport scanning has only made matters worse at Israel’s Ben-Gurion Airport, according to a recent report.
