Security, automation, and smart home solutions giant ADT has announced a significant upgrade to its ADT Plus home security system, integrating facial recognition technology from Google Nest.
The new feature, called “Trusted Neighbor”, allows homeowners to automate secure access for trusted individuals, such as dog walkers, babysitters, or service providers, using facial recognition. When the system recognizes a familiar face through Google Nest cameras, it can disarm the security system and grant temporary access to the home.
The ADT Plus system includes new hardware and deeper integration with Google Nest devices, with an aim toward enhancing both security and convenience, and can automate responses to various non-emergency events, such as letting in a neighbor to check on a water leak or to retrieve a delivered package.
The system can also be programmed for time-based access, such as allowing a cat sitter entry during specific hours.
ADT’s upgrade involves extensive use of smart home technologies, including smart door locks and sensors, which can be controlled via the ADT Plus app. Users can manage these automations, or disable them if needed, through their smartphone.
Though Trusted Neighbor aims to simplify the process of granting access to trusted individuals while maintaining security, it does potentially raise some privacy concerns, given that the home security system requires the collection and storage of third parties’ biometric data.
