Acer is bringing passwordless authentication to more consumers, care of GoTrust.
The companies have announced that the latter’s GoTrust ID authentication system has been preloaded into new Acer computers that started shipping in December. The computers include Windows-based laptops and desktop PCs equipped with BLE connectivity.
GoTrust ID is designed to authenticate a user based on device identification with respect to Android and iOS smartphones, together with facial, fingerprint, and or iris recognition, depending on a given device’s capabilities. The authentication system completely eschews usernames and passwords, and is approved for use with Windows Hello, the biometric authentication system built into the Windows 10 operating system. As such, it could help to further aide Microsoft in its intensifying effort to promote post-password authentication to Windows users.
The app is also capable of acting as a second factor authentication key over BLE compliant with the FIDO Alliance’s U2F specifications.
Commenting on the new GoTrust support, Acer Assistant Vice President Jade Zhou said, “Adding passwordless GoTrust ID to Acer computers makes them some of the most secure and easiest to use PCs available,” adding that the app “makes it convenient to use a smartphone as an authentication token.”
