Azercell, Azerbaijan’s leading mobile operator, has expanded its acceptance of digital ID cards to all its authorized dealer stores and Azercell Exclusive offices. As of this week, customers can now conduct transactions at these locations using digital ID codes from the “myGov” app.
The initiative was implemented in cooperation with the Innovation and Digital Development Agency (IDDA) to ensure secure and efficient services, maintaining high data privacy standards.
Azercell had already begun accepting digital IDs at its Exclusive offices on September 2, 2024, as part of a broader effort to integrate digital identity solutions in line with a presidential decree from July 16 of this year. The country is rapidly advancing the use of digital IDs across both public and private sectors.
Shahin Aliyev, Deputy Chairman of the IDDA, emphasized the importance of this shift at the recent presentation of the updated MyGov platform. Aliyev highlighted the risks of traditional ID card copying practices, which pose significant data security challenges, reinforcing the need for digital transformation to protect citizens’ personal information.
The groundwork for MyGov was laid between 2021 and 2022, with significant progress made by early 2024. By August of this year, 65 percent of Azerbaijan’s population was using digital IDs, and over 450 e-services from various state authorities were available through the MyGov portal.
The IDDA announced plans to implement digital IDs through the platform, aiming to attract startups and tech companies to foster innovation.
MyGov offers a comprehensive suite of digital services, including digital versions of essential documents, life event services, personal data management, and a verification system. The platform also incorporates environmental initiatives, utility management tools, and a pension calculator.
