Canada’s Border Agency Issues FRT RFI
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has issued a Request for Information (RFI) as it seeks to explore and potentially adopt new smartphone-based facial recognition solutions. Its inquiry is aimed at gathering information to assess and compare the technical performance of various biometric FRT solutions against those currently in use within the Canadian context. The RFI specifies that interested respondents must meet certain qualifications to participate in future procurement processes related to this technology. Respondents must be based in a country that is a member of either NATO or the Five Eyes alliance, highlighting the security-sensitive nature of the technology in question. The deadline for submission of all required documentation and responses is May 21, 2024, at 14:00 EDT.
Japan Aids Burkina Faso in Biometric Refugee Enrolment
The Japanese government has been lending technological assistance to Burkina Faso as the latter works to document internally displaced people. The latest donation included 120 fingerprint sensors and 120 power banks to support the biometric registration of internally displaced persons (IDPs). Initiated in May 2019, this biometric registration system aims to provide accurate data and improve aid distribution for IDPs. With tools developed in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the system enhances the registration and management of IDPs, aids in detecting duplicate registrations, and facilitates the analysis and dissemination of data. The full implementation of this system is a significant endeavor, expected to cost over two billion CFA francs.
Proposed Bill Could Muddy CLEAR’s Airport Business
In California, legislation is being considered to impose new regulations on CLEAR, a biometric expedited screening program operator, primarily active in airports. The bill aims to mandate that CLEAR establish separate security lanes instead of using existing TSA lanes. This move seeks to address issues of inequality in airport security access. While supported by various labor unions as a measure against the perceived “pay-to-play” nature of CLEAR’s services, the proposal faces opposition from major airlines and industry groups, citing potential revenue losses, increased airfare costs, and logistical challenges.
Apple Acquires French Computer Vision Startup
Apple has expanded its biometric and computer vision capabilities by acquiring Datakalab, a French startup known for its work in AI compression and computer vision technology. Although the acquisition, which took place in December, has not been officially confirmed by either company, it has been noted in a report to the European Commission. Datakalab, employing between 10 and 20 people prior to the acquisition, has been involved in significant projects such as deploying AI tools in Paris’s transportation systems to monitor mask compliance during the pandemic and collaborating with companies like Disney. The startup is recognized for its efficient, low-power deep learning algorithms that can operate directly on devices, emphasizing a “Privacy by Design” approach.
Russian Delegation to Showcase FRT in Dubai
Russian delegates will be showcasing facial recognition technology among other products and services at a business event in Dubai, hosted by the Russian Export Center from April 24th to 25th. This event will include participation from Russia’s UAE Trade Representative, leaders of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and various UAE government ministries. The focus on facial recognition technology comes at a time when Russian tech companies face significant international sanctions following the country’s invasion of Ukraine, particularly from the United States and the European Union.
Passkeys Come to Supply Chain Software
Apexanalytix, a supply chain software company, has announced its support for passkeys, enabling suppliers to log into their accounts using biometric methods such as fingerprints or facial scans, or a screen lock PIN. Passkeys eliminate the need for traditional passwords, which are often vulnerable due to their susceptibility to being weak, reused, or stolen. The passkey system stores login credentials in an encrypted format, reducing the risk of data breaches. Apexanalytix says its passkey support is part of its ongoing development of security features, including its apex Neural Engine, an AI-powered tool designed to improve supplier-buyer interactions and risk management processes.
Cyprus Official Lays Out Plans for ‘Digital Citizen’ Program
Cyprus is advancing its digital transition with the launch of the “digital citizen” initiative, as announced by Nicodemos Damianou, the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy. The initiative will feature a mobile app that enables citizens to digitally store essential documents like their ID card, driving license, and vehicle suitability certificate, aiming to reduce the need for physical presence and streamline governmental interactions. Damianou also disclosed plans for a new central government gateway, gov.cy, expected to launch around mid-year, which will support online state services and an electronic identity and signature system to simplify procedures currently requiring physical signatures.
