Apple is definitely sticking with Face ID for this year’s new flagship iPhones, and is even doubling down on it with improvements to the underlying software, suggest new rumors from Mac Otakara.
Citing an anonymous source in Apple’s supply chain, the Japanese blog says that Apple is planning a 6.5″ OLED iPhone for this year. That would make it about the same size as last autumn’s iPhone 8 Plus, but with its use of Face ID facial recognition eliminating the need for a big lower bezel with a Touch ID fingerprint sensor, it will have a much bigger screen extending across almost the entire front face of the device.
The blog adds that Apple is also planning a 5.8″ OLED device that will feature much the same design as the iPhone X, and a 6″ iPhone that will use an LCD display.
All of the devices will feature Face ID, and Mac Otakara says that iOS 12, the next iteration of Apple’s mobile operating system, will improve Face ID’s operation with support for face scanning even when the device is held horizontally – a feature anticipating for this year’s new iPads, as well.
No mention is made of in-display fingerprint recognition, a technology that has emerged on multiple new devices from lower-tier smartphone makers and that would allow for the revival of Apple’s iconic Touch ID system. But that doesn’t mean Apple won’t try to include this feature in any of its new devices, nor is Mac Otakara’s report a guarantee that they will all feature Face ID; none of these rumors have been confirmed or denied by Apple itself.
