This is going to be a transformational year for the global biometrics market, according to a report from Frost & Sullivan. According to a report summary, the consultancy predicts “significant growth in both public and commercial applications” of the technology.
The report uses 2014 as a base year, and notes that fingerprint scanning was the dominant modality in that year – an understandable assessment, especially given the increased prominence of fingerprint sensors in mobile devices during that time. But that is changing; Frost & Sullivan predicts that other modalities including face, finger vein, and palm scanners are going to be on the rise in 2015.
The report points to emerging opportunities in the finance, retail, and healthcare sectors, as well as nascent appetites for the technology in gaming, education, and hospitality. Industrial, IT, and telecommunications verticals remain important. And in terms of regional differences, North America and Europe are predicted to stand out, “with the larger regions generating 74 percent of global revenue due to government adoption.”
Frost & Sullivan’s enthusiasm about the global biometrics market reflects that of other market analysts, such as Tractica. It’s also very much of a piece with the growth consultancy’s longstanding excitement about biometrics, having published previous reports optimistic about more specific sectors in biometrics, and also having lauded biometrics companies with prestigious awards.
