The FIDO Alliance is seeing growing enthusiasm for its authentication standards in a world that is increasingly dissatisfied with password-based security.
The organization has announced that more than 200 products are now FIDO Certified. That suggests considerable growth, given that FIDO had only reached the 150-product mark in April; and indeed the consortium says that it has seen 100 percent growth in FIDO Certified products since the start of the year.
FIDO is also seeing growth in online authentication, with major companies like Dropbox, PayPal, and Google having enabled FIDO authentication. Google in particular has been a very enthusiastic supporter, with a recently published internal study of its use of FIDO-based security keys asserting that FIDO authentication “is markedly faster than other strong authentication methods, has zero authentication failures, reduces hardware and support costs over one-time password (OTP) tokens, and provides all of the necessary privacy and security protections from phishing and man-in-the-middle attacks,” as FIDO summarized it in a statement.
Meanwhile, high-profile security breaches such as the recent Twitter account credentials dump are further highlighting the vulnerabilities of password-based security. That should push even more organizations to adopt FIDO security, with many more FIDO Certified products and services to come.
