Zumigo has introduced fraud-aware silent authentication that combines mobile-number verification with checks for SIM swaps, number transfers and other changes to a phone account. Its Assure Authentication service selects among cellular, Wi-Fi and desktop-to-phone methods through a single integration.
The approach uses the mobile phone as an authentication factor without asking customers to retrieve and enter a one-time passcode in supported journeys. Alongside the possession check, businesses can obtain information about the number’s history and apply their own fraud policies before allowing access or completing a transaction.
On cellular connections, the platform uses Silent Network Authentication. For Wi-Fi connections, it uses SIM-Based Authentication. A delegated desktop-to-phone method supports interactions that begin on a computer but require confirmation through the customer’s phone. The platform automatically chooses the appropriate authentication route for the interaction.
Each check can return fraud indicators including recent SIM swaps, port-outs, call forwarding, number tenure and line type. A SIM swap replaces the SIM associated with a number, while a port-out transfers the number to another carrier. Both can be legitimate account changes, but they also provide information for assessing takeover risk.
Zumigo says customers can feed these results into existing risk models and decision rules. Rather than treating successful number verification as the whole authentication decision, a business can consider whether the associated account has recently changed and request additional verification when its policy requires it.
“Fraud leaders don’t just need to know the right phone is present. They need to know it’s still in the right hands,” said Harish Manepalli, Zumigo’s chief technology officer. He said a phone’s history on a carrier network is harder for AI to fake than a face or a voice.
Zumigo says its identity verification is used by top 10 global banks, payment providers and e-commerce platforms. The company holds FIDO2 Server certification and says it supports more than 800 mobile network operators, covering 4.5 billion mobile numbers in 180 countries.
Zumigo plans live demonstrations of silent sign-in, SIM-based sign-in and desktop-to-phone delegated trust at Money20/20 USA in Las Vegas from October 18 to 21, where it says a large mobile operator partner will join it.
