Zenni Optical Launches Lens Coating to Thwart Facial Recognition Amid Growing Biometric Surveillance

Zenni Optical, an online eyewear retailer, has introduced Zenni ID Guard, a new lens coating designed to help users protect their privacy from facial recognition technology. The innovative coating reflects near-infrared light, which is commonly used in biometric systems, to disrupt facial scans while maintaining clear, normal vision for the wearer.

How Zenni ID Guard Works

According to Zenni’s internal testing, the ID Guard coating can reflect up to 80 percent of the near-infrared wavelengths employed by many facial recognition systems. The coating creates a subtle, iridescent pink sheen that signals its presence but does not significantly affect the optical clarity of the lenses. The company also cautions that the coating may interfere with some user-facing systems such as smartphone Face ID or Windows Hello, underscoring its effectiveness in blocking infrared-based scanning.

The launch of Zenni ID Guard comes amid rapid growth in biometric surveillance technologies worldwide. In border control alone, examples include Manila International Airport announcing a terminal-wide rollout of facial recognition e-gates, scheduled for completion within six months as of June of this year, and the Port of Rotterdam adopting facial ID checks for truck drivers as of April.

This product launch also closely follows legislative developments in the United States, where Congress recently passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R. 1) on 4 July 2025. The legislation allocates a record $175 billion for border enforcement and advanced technologies, including extensive investments in biometric systems. As governments and private sectors invest heavily in facial recognition infrastructure, consumer interest in privacy-protecting solutions like Zenni ID Guard is likely to grow.
