Yubico has joined the European Cyber Security Organisation (ECSO), a pan-European public-private federation focused on European cybersecurity policy and standards.
ECSO, established in 2016 as the European Commission’s contractual partner for its Public-Private Partnership in Cybersecurity, says the membership is meant to advance phishing-resistant authentication and digital identity standards across the bloc. Yubico, maker of the YubiKey hardware security key, said its work with ECSO would focus on education and best practices for deploying hardware-backed passkeys, retiring older multi-factor authentication methods that remain vulnerable to phishing, and building accountability for both human and automated identities in enterprise environments.
“Welcoming Yubico to ECSO is a strong signal of where the European cybersecurity ecosystem is heading,” said Dr. Joanna Świątkowska, secretary general at ECSO. “Their globally recognised expertise in authentication and identity protection reflects the level of innovation and excellence required to ensure Europe’s digital sovereignty.”
Yubico, founded in Sweden in 2007, keeps its European headquarters in Stockholm, with manufacturing based in Sweden, alongside operations in more than 160 countries. Jerrod Chong, the company’s chief executive, said the ECSO partnership would help it “scale passwordless authentication responsibly, close the identity verification gap, and firmly secure both human and non-human identities across the enterprise.” Yubico said it has also been pushing in the EU for digital identity wallets to be backed by non-syncable hardware passkeys rather than software-based alternatives, tying the ECSO membership to the bloc’s ongoing EU Digital Identity Wallet rollout.
The membership follows a change atop Yubico, which named Chong chief executive following a leadership change late last year, and comes as research from FIDO Alliance and HID has found that organizations’ confidence in passkey adoption is outrunning their actual deployment progress.
