Here’s Another Hint That Xiaomi’s Next Phone Will Have an In-Display Fingerprint Sensor

Another hint has emerged that Xiaomi will be the next big smartphone maker to integrate an in-display fingerprint sensor into a new device: A video has emerged that purportedly shows such a fingerprint scan in progress on what’s thought to be the forthcoming Mi 8 smartphone.

It’s the latest clue after the company’s CEO, Lei Jun, straight-up said the next phone in Xiaomi’s Mi line would feature the technology. But with that comment having been made so casually, and in a lighthearted tone, on social media, no one was sure how seriously to take it. The new video, which shows a smartphone being unlocked with an in-display fingerprint scan, thus adds some credence to the theory; but, as TechRadar notes, it comes from “a relatively unknown source”, so it still isn’t clear just how trustworthy this latest bit of evidence is.

In any case, in-display fingerprint sensor technology has already been proven to be viable on mid-tier smartphones, with Vivo having pioneered it earlier this year via its X20 UD Plus and X21 smartphones, and Huawei following suit with its Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS device. The technology is proving popular in part for its capacity to facilitate full-size displays, since there’s no need to make room for a physical fingerprint-scanning button. It also offers a bit of a wow factor in a market that is now pretty thoroughly saturated with standard fingerprint sensors.

As for whether it will show up in the Mi 8, that should become clear pretty soon, with the device anticipated to launch in Asia this month.
