The World Foundation has unveiled its new World ID Passport Credential pilot, expanding its digital identity verification capabilities beyond its signature Orb biometric system. The initiative allows individuals to link NFC-enabled ICAO 9303-compliant passports to their World ID through a secure cryptographic verification process. This development follows the foundation’s recent strategic pivot toward comprehensive identity verification technology, moving beyond its initial cryptocurrency focus.
The passport verification system leverages the same zero-knowledge proof technology that underpins the foundation’s iris biometric verification, enabling users to prove specific attributes like age or nationality without exposing the underlying personal data. This selective disclosure approach aligns with privacy-preserving standards similar to those employed in the EU’s eIDAS framework.
Initially available for passport holders from Chile, Colombia, Malaysia, and South Korea on iOS devices, the program utilizes the devices’ built-in NFC capabilities to read the passport’s secure chip. The foundation has confirmed plans to expand to Android devices and additional countries following successful implementation of standardized e-passport verification protocols. This alternative verification pathway addresses the scalability challenges previously faced with the Orb system, which has experienced supply constraints amid rapid adoption.
In parallel with the launch, the World Foundation announced a significant financial development. World Assets Limited, its subsidiary, has sold 59.5 million WLD tokens to select private institutional investors. This token sale serves as a capital buffer to ensure financial stability and operational resilience. The tokens sold are locked for a one-year period, followed by a three-month daily linear unlock, ensuring alignment with the network’s long-term goals.
The World Foundation stated that proceeds from the token sale will support the expansion of the World Protocol’s infrastructure, including the development of its recently announced World Chain blockchain platform. The funds will be allocated to scaling the network’s verification infrastructure, enhancing security protocols, and expanding community engagement initiatives. The network currently demonstrates substantial growth metrics, with weekly increases exceeding 300,000 Orb-verified users and more than 790,000 total network participants, highlighting the pressing need for additional verification pathways.
The introduction of passport-based verification represents a significant evolution in the World Foundation’s approach to digital identity, combining traditional government-issued credentials with blockchain-based verification systems. This hybrid model could serve as a blueprint for future digital identity systems that bridge conventional identification methods with emerging technologies while maintaining strong privacy protections.
