Will Google’s Pixel 4 XL Have Face Recognition, an In-Display Fingerprint Sensor, or Both?

July 9, 2019

Will Google's Pixel 4 XL Have Face Recognition, an In-Display Fingerprint Sensor, or Both?

New renders of the Google’s next big Pixel smartphone are further making the case that it’s likely to feature an in-display fingerprint sensor and possibly a facial recognition system for user authentication.

The renders come by way of Pricebaba and professional leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer, who goes by the social media handle @OnLeaks; and they show device images very much in line with the official, teaser-style images tweeted out by Google last month. The Pixel 4 XL, as depicted in the new renders, has an almost full-size screen, with a small bezel on the bottom of the device’s front face, and a somewhat thicker top bezel that appears to house dual cameras and two other sensors.

On the rear of the device is a chunky, square camera bump featuring three cameras as well as a mic and flash LED.

It isn’t clear what these renders are based on. In posting them, Pricebaba framed them as a follow-up to previous renders based on “leaked schematics”, and noted that this is part of a collaboration with @OnLeaks.

In any case, if the renders are accurate, they offer another strong indication that Google’s next flagship smartphones will either bring the fingerprint sensor into the display, or use facial recognition for user authentication, or both. These are both highly popular trends in the smartphone sector right now, and given the number of Google’s competitors that have looked to these technologies for a competitive edge, it’s a fair bet that Google will want to compete on the same turf.
