Whoop Launches 5.0 Fitness Band with Medical-Grade Model and Extended Battery

Whoop has launched two new fitness wearables, the Whoop 5.0 and Whoop MG, offering substantial hardware and software upgrades aimed at both everyday users and professional athletes. The new devices introduce improved battery life, a redesigned clasp system, and in the case of the MG model, medical-grade monitoring capabilities.

Performance Upgrades and New Health Monitoring Tools

The Whoop 5.0 features a 7 percent smaller form factor, a 60 percent faster processor, and upgraded sensors that collect biometric data 26 times per second. This model now offers a 14-day battery life, nearly tripling the runtime of the previous generation. For users on higher-tier plans, a new wireless PowerPack holds up to 30 days of charge. Overall, the new hardware is nearly 10 times more power efficient than its predecessor.

The Whoop MG, exclusive to subscribers in the new “Life” tier, represents the company’s first foray into regulated health monitoring. It includes ECG capabilities, atrial fibrillation (AFib) detection, and blood pressure trend insights. While the device does not offer continuous or clinically validated blood pressure readings, it provides estimated metrics to help users monitor cardiovascular health over time.

These features expand on Whoop’s longstanding focus on biometric health tracking. In addition to cardiovascular tools, the new devices support enhanced menstrual and hormonal cycle tracking, integrated by default in the latest app update. The “Healthspan” feature, which estimates biological aging based on physiological markers, adds a further dimension to wellness insights.

Design Updates and Membership Options

Both wearables maintain Whoop’s screenless design and require users to access data through a revamped companion app. The app now features a simplified interface, with personalized plans highlighted on the home screen. Improvements to the activity auto-detection system allow for more accurate workout tracking.

A new clasp system has been introduced with the updated hardware, which unfortunately renders previous bands and accessories incompatible. However, both models are compatible with Whoop’s expanded Body Smart Apparel line, allowing wear on multiple parts of the body, not just the wrist.

The new membership structure offers three tiers: One ($199/year), Peak ($239/year), and Life ($359/year). The Whoop 5.0 is available with One and Peak, while the MG model and its medical-grade features are exclusive to Life. Existing users can upgrade to the new devices for a one-time fee of $49 or by extending their membership by one year, in which case the fee is waived.

These updates are part of Whoop’s broader strategy to expand its health monitoring ecosystem. By combining advanced sensing technology with targeted subscription tiers, the company aims to maintain a competitive edge in the crowded wearables market while appealing to users seeking high-precision fitness and wellness insights.
