WEX, a global payments and fleet management company, is partnering with Trulioo to introduce automated identity verification for its European fuel card customers. The move replaces manual Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures with Trulioo’s Document Verification and Biometrics solution, aimed at accelerating onboarding while reducing fraud risk.
Automating Customer Verification
The Trulioo platform combines document authentication with biometric checks to confirm user identities. Its algorithms are trained on 25 million global images and leverage more than 200 biometric markers to detect forgery attempts, presentation attacks, and synthetic identities. The technology has been validated by iBeta at Level 2, with reported success in catching 100 percent of tested fraud attempts. The system also supports guided document capture and post-capture feedback, helping customers complete the verification process quickly and accurately.
“By replacing manual, time-consuming processes with intelligent verification, we’re helping to reduce fraud risk, streamline onboarding and create a seamless digital experience for our customers,” said William Fitzgerald, Vice President of Fraud & Financial Crimes at WEX.
Global Expansion and Compliance Context
The adoption reflects a wider trend of financial institutions turning to biometric verification as regulators tighten digital identity and anti-money laundering (AML) standards across Europe. Automated KYC systems are increasingly viewed as necessary to balance operational efficiency with compliance obligations. Trulioo already provides verification across 195 countries and has maintained coverage in Greece and Israel since 2022, alongside its broader European expansion.
Trulioo CEO Vicky Bindra emphasized the importance of balancing ease of use with robust safeguards: “Across regulated industries, businesses are looking to balance smooth digital experiences with the highest standards of security and compliance. Trulioo makes this possible with intelligent, automated identity verification at a global scale.”
Why It Matters
The partnership highlights how payment providers are modernizing customer onboarding to prevent fraud while responding to evolving regulatory demands. For WEX, which serves fuel card customers across Europe, the integration is expected to shorten approval timelines and improve customer experience without compromising security. Industry analysis indicates that biometric authentication has become mainstream across banking, payments, and insurance, and its adoption by fleet card providers points to the growing role of biometrics in specialized financial services.
By shifting to an automated system, WEX aims to strengthen fraud prevention, meet compliance requirements, and deliver faster, more reliable digital onboarding for its European customer base.
