The Western Identification Network is upgrading to NEC Corporation of America’s latest Integra-ID 7 cloud platform, a move that will modernize a major multistate biometric system used by law-enforcement and public-safety agencies across the western United States. NEC said the project will shift WIN from a more traditional on-premises model to a cloud-native architecture designed for faster updates, improved scalability and lower operational burden.

NEC described WIN as one of the country’s largest regional biometric identification networks and said the new release will maintain compliance with FBI CJIS Security Policy requirements. The company said Integra-ID 7 uses a microservices-based architecture and adds a web-based Integrated Biometric Workspace, modular testing and deployment, and more regular feature and security releases with less disruption than conventional upgrade cycles.

The upgrade also brings new investigative and biometric functions. NEC said WIN will gain ACE-V web applications for latent case work, case-based searching, improved administrative tools, iris biometric template storage and matching, and storage and matching for scars, marks and tattoos. The company also pointed to automated algorithm updates based on its latest NIST-tested matching technology, which frames the upgrade as both an infrastructure refresh and a functional expansion of the network’s biometric toolkit.

The announcement lands as agencies continue to revisit the architecture behind U.S. biometric systems. Federal buyers have recently sought advanced biometric algorithms for the Next Generation Identification system, and the Justice Department and FBI have also asked industry about classified multimodal biometric system software. Those efforts show that public-sector interest is not limited to new matching modes. Agencies are also looking at how biometric platforms are built, maintained and updated.
