W3C Launches Community Group to Apply Verifiable Credentials to Supply Chains

A new W3C Community Group focused on standardising the use of Verifiable Credentials in supply chains officially launched over the weekend, issuing a Call for Participation to businesses, researchers, and standards practitioners.

The Verifiable Supply Chain Community Group aims to develop industry-specific profiles, interoperability frameworks, and certification guidelines that enable organisations to exchange cryptographically verifiable proofs of origin, custody, compliance, and sustainability across multi-party industrial networks. The group’s stated goals include building trust, reducing fraud, and improving operational efficiency in supply chains through machine-verifiable claims.

The group is built around the W3C’s Verifiable Credentials ecosystem – the same standards framework used in digital identity wallets and government-issued credentials – and the related UORA (Universal Object and Resource Attestation) protocol, a proposed specification for binding physical assets to decentralised identifiers. In this model, a physical component, batch of materials, or finished product could carry a DID-linked credential asserting its provenance, chain of custody, or regulatory compliance status, verifiable by any party in the supply chain without reliance on a central registry.

The group’s scope covers practical implementation, industry alignment, and certification guidelines, downstream of the core standards work already completed. W3C published Verifiable Credentials 2.0 as a full standard in 2025, providing the credential format the community group will now apply to supply chain contexts.

The launch follows the group’s formal proposal on February 3, 2026, and is part of a broader expansion of W3C’s digital identity standards into new application domains. W3C Community Groups are open, community-driven efforts and their outputs do not carry full W3C Recommendation status unless advanced through the formal standards track.
