Vodafone Idea has begun enabling network-based silent mobile verification for its Vi subscribers across WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, validating a user’s mobile number through the telecom network rather than a one-time password sent over SMS. The capability covers account registration, mobile-number validation, login, re-login, account recovery, and security checks, and reaches a subscriber base the operator put at roughly 198.5 million as of April 2026.
Silent Mobile Verification works by confirming the device and SIM against the carrier’s network in the background while the user is on Vi’s mobile connection. When a Vi subscriber takes an action that needs verification on one of the Meta apps, the request is validated through the network itself, so the number is confirmed without the user receiving or entering a code. The implementation draws on GSMA Open Gateway, the telecom industry’s common framework for exposing network capabilities such as number verification to applications through standard interfaces, and removes the SMS round trip that OTP-based checks depend on.
The shift away from one-time passwords is positioned as a security measure as much as a convenience. SMS OTPs are a frequent target of phishing, SIM-swap fraud, and social-engineering scams, because a code that can be intercepted or coaxed out of a user is enough to take over an account. By moving verification into the network layer, where the check is tied to the SIM and device rather than a transmittable code, the approach is meant to cut both the friction of manual entry and the attack surface that codes create.
Network-based authentication has been gaining ground as carriers expose verification as a service to apps and enterprises. IPification and Telin launched a network-level authentication platform that verifies phone number, SIM, and device silently, and IPification has extended the same model through deals such as a partnership with Viettel in Vietnam, reflecting a wider industry move to replace SMS codes with carrier-level checks.
For Meta, routing verification through an Indian carrier’s network extends that pattern to one of its largest user markets, where Vi’s subscriber numbers determine the reach of the rollout. The verification runs only for Vi subscribers on the operator’s network, with the carrier handling the silent check that the Meta apps consume.
