VicRoads has launched a major digital security upgrade, implementing passkey authentication for its nearly 5 million myVicRoads account holders across Victoria. The new system allows users to access their accounts using biometric authentication methods including Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello, PIN, or swipe pattern.
The implementation, developed in partnership with FIDO Alliance member Corbado, represents a significant shift in government digital security. The FIDO Alliance has been at the forefront of promoting passwordless authentication standards, with passkeys emerging as a secure alternative to traditional passwords.
During a recent pilot program, VicRoads successfully created over 200,000 passkeys, demonstrating strong user adoption. The agency, which annually registers more than 6 million vehicles and licenses over 5 million drivers, joins other major Australian organizations including Telstra, myGov, and UBank in implementing passkey technology.
“Digital security is a key priority for VicRoads, and passkeys reflect our dedication to keeping our 4.8m myVicRoads customers’ information safe and delivering a secure and seamless user experience,” said Crispin Blackall, Chief Technology Officer at VicRoads.
The technology uses public-key cryptography to enhance security and reduce phishing risks. This aligns with broader industry trends toward advanced authentication methods that prioritize both security and user experience.
“By going passkey-first, VicRoads is providing its customers with both the highest level of security and the best user experience,” said Vincent Delitz, Managing Director at Corbado.
FIDO Alliance CEO Andrew Shikiar praised the implementation: “VicRoads’ adoption of passkeys showcases how government agencies can leverage this industry-wide innovation to protect citizen data while simplifying access to critical services,” he said. “This is a significant step towards a more secure and efficient digital future for Victoria and beyond.”
VicRoads Registration & Licensing operates as a joint venture between the Victorian State Government, Aware Super, Australian Retirement Trust, and Macquarie Asset Management. As biometric authentication technologies continue to face increasing regulatory scrutiny, this implementation demonstrates how government agencies can successfully adopt secure, user-friendly authentication solutions.
