Vadzo Imaging Launches NIR LED Integration Service for Biometric Vision Systems

Vadzo Imaging has introduced an OEM engineering service that pairs near-infrared LED array boards with its monochrome NIR cameras, giving developers of biometric and embedded vision systems a single integrated illumination-and-imaging package. The service is aimed at manufacturers building products such as iris and facial recognition devices, inspection systems, and day-night vision cameras.

The program combines precision-configured NIR LED arrays with Vadzo’s camera modules, adding synchronized LED triggering, wavelength-matched optics, and customizable form factors. The arrays deliver uniform illumination at 850nm or 940nm wavelengths to eliminate the hotspots and shadow zones that degrade image quality, while synchronized pulsing during camera exposure suppresses ambient light. That allows consistent performance from bright daylight to near-zero-lux conditions without adjusting camera settings.

For biometrics, the company points to 940nm covert illumination, which lights the subject for iris and face capture without a visible glow, supporting a more natural user experience. Other target applications include shadow-free industrial inspection of circuit boards and machined parts, vein imaging and wound documentation in medical settings, around-the-clock security surveillance, document and currency verification that reveals features invisible to color cameras, and robotic vision in variable lighting.

The service spans several camera configurations: 20-megapixel and 13-megapixel MIPI rolling-shutter modules, a 5-megapixel USB 3.0 camera compliant with the UVC standard, and a 3.2-megapixel Sony IMX900 GigE camera with a global shutter and high-dynamic-range output. Software control is provided through Vadzo’s VISPA NXT and VISPA ARC software development kits, with C, C++, and Python support across Windows, Linux, and Android, and compatibility with embedded platforms including NVIDIA Jetson, Raspberry Pi, Qualcomm RB, and NXP iMX.

Near-infrared illumination is foundational to iris recognition, which relies on imaging the iris outside the visible spectrum, and the same lighting techniques underpin many facial recognition and presentation-attack-detection systems. Iris capture has been built into deployments ranging from mobile iris-scanning systems used in immigration enforcement to multimodal scanners aimed at airport applications.

Vadzo is targeting OEMs that would otherwise have to source and tune lighting separately. The company says the service supports customization of LED array geometry, wavelength, beam pattern, enclosure design, and firmware, and is available for evaluation, prototyping, and production.
