U.S. Special Operations Command has opened an industry collaboration process focused on contactless iris collection. A special notice posted through SAM.gov identifies SOFWERX and USSOCOM’s Program Executive Office for Tactical Information Systems as the organizations behind the event.
Interested participants must submit requests to attend by 11:59 p.m. Eastern on August 28. The notice limits participation to U.S. citizens. It does not announce a contract award, funding amount or selected supplier, and organizations should treat it as an early engagement opportunity rather than a conventional request for proposals.
Contactless iris systems capture the patterned portion of the eye without requiring the subject to position an eye against a physical scanner. Distance, movement, lighting and gaze angle can make collection more difficult than with close-range systems, particularly when equipment must operate outside a controlled enrollment setting.
Iris recognition can provide a separate modality from face and fingerprint matching in a multimodal record. A contactless design may also reduce handling and speed collection, provided the sensor can acquire an image of sufficient quality at its intended range.
The Special Operations community uses biometric collection to support identity operations in environments where personnel may need to work with portable equipment and limited infrastructure. USSOCOM has not publicly identified a preferred vendor or disclosed performance results for the contactless iris effort in the notice.
The event adds to a wider set of U.S. defense programs examining portable and multimodal biometric collection. The U.S. Army previously awarded Parsons a $1.9 million contract for next-generation biometric collection, covering technology intended to replace or update fielded capabilities. Defense programs also draw on specialists with experience across Department of Defense biometric identity systems.
SOFWERX is a collaboration platform that connects special operations personnel with companies, researchers and other technology developers. Its events can be used to clarify operational problems, review available technologies and shape possible follow-on acquisitions. Attendance does not guarantee a procurement or contract.
The SAM.gov listing remains active and records August 28 as the response deadline.
