UnionDigital Bank has introduced iProov’s biometric liveness solutions to strengthen fraud prevention and support a risk-based authentication strategy that adapts security requirements depending on transaction context. The bank is using iProov’s Dynamic and Express Liveness to verify that users are physically present during high-risk actions, while allowing faster flows for low-risk activity to maintain a streamlined digital banking experience.
Deployment aligned with risk-based authentication
Under the new system, UnionDigital can trigger different levels of biometric checks depending on the situation. Higher-assurance Dynamic Liveness may be used for actions such as logging in from a new device or requesting a transaction limit increase, while Express Liveness offers rapid verification for regular daily usage. This tiered approach follows a wider industry shift, as other institutions adopt step-up authentication to counter deepfake attempts and account takeover risks, as seen in recent deployments by financial service providers.
iProov’s technology is designed to confirm that a real person is present at the time of authentication and that the interaction is not generated using recorded footage or synthetic media. This capability has become a priority as digital channels face rising fraud attempts using deepfake video and manipulated identity assets, highlighted in industry responses to deepfake-related financial losses.
UnionDigital Bank said the rollout forms part of its broader efforts to make digital banking secure without adding unnecessary friction for legitimate users. By applying biometric checks based on risk profile rather than uniformly across all transactions, the bank aims to balance protection with customer usability.
Regulatory pressure and growing use of biometric authentication
The adoption of liveness detection also aligns with increasing regulatory attention on fintech security controls. In the Philippines, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has issued guidance encouraging the use of phishing-resistant authentication methods and reducing reliance on vulnerable one-time password flows. At the same time, international regulatory actions, such as enhanced fintech oversight by agencies referenced in recent policy updates, reflect a global move toward stronger identity verification standards.
Cloud-based biometric verification has grown quickly across the financial sector. Providers have reported more than sixty percent year-over-year growth in authentication volumes as banks respond to attempts to compromise user accounts and move illicit funds through digital platforms. Risk-based biometric authentication is increasingly viewed as a way to apply stronger security only where needed, while minimizing disruption to everyday transactions.
