Trucking Tech Firm Adds Auto-Disable Feature to Comply with BIPA

Lytx, a provider of video safety and telematics solutions, has unveiled a new geofencing feature that automatically disables recording when trucks enter Illinois state borders. The feature, announced this week, comes as a direct response to the state’s stringent biometric privacy regulations and recent legal challenges.Closeup of a camera lens suggesting imaging or computer vision technology.

The development follows Lytx’s recent $4.25 million settlement with Illinois truckers over allegations of improper biometric data collection. The lawsuit, filed in 2020, highlighted the significant legal risks companies face when collecting biometric data in Illinois.

The new geofencing technology uses GPS tracking to detect when vehicles cross into Illinois territory, at which point it automatically deactivates the recording functions. This proactive measure aims to ensure compliance with the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA), which has led to numerous legal challenges for technology companies operating in the state.

The implementation of the feature reflects a growing trend among technology providers adapting their products to navigate varying state privacy regulations. A recent Illinois Supreme Court ruling determined that insurers are not required to cover BIPA-related legal costs, further increasing the financial risks for companies collecting biometric data in the state.

The trucking industry has been particularly affected by these privacy regulations, as many fleet management systems rely on driver-facing cameras and biometric monitoring for safety and compliance purposes. Lytx’s geofencing solution represents one of the first technological adaptations specifically designed to address these privacy concerns while maintaining fleet management capabilities in other jurisdictions.
