Touch panel manufacturer GIS (General Interface Solution) has announced a major strategic realignment, moving away from legacy touch panel products to concentrate on three emerging sectors: optics, biometrics, and automotive technology. The company plans to reduce its dependence on traditional product lines by 2029, as part of a long-term transformation plan aimed at repositioning its business amid shifting market conditions.
Strategic Pivot Driven by Innovation and Market Pressure
The move comes as GIS faces increasing demand for advanced biometric and optical solutions, particularly in mobile, automotive, and AR/VR applications. The shift also follows recent financial turbulence. After reporting significant losses in 2023 and early 2024, GIS returned to profitability later in 2024, prompting a reassessment of its long-term strategy. The company is now seeking to build a more diversified and future-facing product mix.
In the optics sector, GIS is investing in advanced display technologies such as MicroLED and optical modules for augmented reality. A key part of this initiative includes collaboration with Porotech to produce high-performance AR displays. These technologies are aimed at head-mounted displays, heads-up displays (HUDs), and other next-generation visual systems. The company’s prior experience with innovations like in-display fingerprint sensors demonstrates its ability to integrate optics with biometric functionality.
GIS’s renewed focus on biometrics reflects growing global demand for secure digital identification. The company has expanded its fingerprint recognition offerings in 2025 and continues to explore facial recognition applications.
Automotive Focus and Global Expansion
In the automotive sector, GIS has not yet disclosed specific products, but its plans include expansion into HUDs and human-machine interface technologies tailored for vehicles. The move lines up with global industry trends, where electronics manufacturers are adapting to meet the rising demand for connected and autonomous vehicle features.
The company is also expanding its operational footprint, growing R&D activities in Taiwan and China while increasing manufacturing capacity in Vietnam. GIS anticipates that its new product categories will soon account for more than half of its total business. This expectation underscores the scale of the transition and highlights the company’s efforts to redefine its market role.
